Throughout theatre history, there have been a few bold pioneers-in-heels who crashed the boys’ club, and wrote hit songs and shows like “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” Sweet CharityOn the Town, “Witchcraft,” Once Upon a Mattress, and so much more.  This entertaining and moving 75 minute revue, hosted and scripted by Deborah Grace Winer, celebrates these songwriters—against the backdrop of the current world’s surprisingly ongoing conversation… ”What is a woman’s place?”

Eowyn Ivey’s debut novel The Snow Child, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, is reborn as a magical new musical featuring a score that combines Alaskan backcountry string-band traditions and contemporary musical theater. The 1920 Alaskan wilderness is a brutal place to try to save a marriage. Reeling from the loss of an unborn child, Mabel and Jack struggle to rebuild their lives even as the fissures between them continue to widen. But everything changes suddenly when they are visited by a wild, mysterious girl who embodies the dark woods that surround their cabin. In this beautiful and violent land, things are rarely as they appear, and what the snow child teaches them will ultimately transform them all.

Drawing on his “revelatory and entertaining” (New York Times) 2016 book, Viertel will use examples from traditional musicals like Fiddler on the Roof and Gypsy as well as more recent shows like Hairspray and The Book of Mormon to show you how and why they work. Viertel is Senior Vice President of Jujamcyn Theaters (The Book of MormonKinky Boots), and also teaches musical theater at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
